Just Mercy By Bryan Stevenson - 1963 Words

Are some lives worth more than others? Are some lives worthy to be considered lives at all? Bryan Stevenson aims to answer that in his book Just Mercy. In it, he explores the American justice system and its systemic prejudice, whether it’s based on race, income, or gender. Stevenson is a lawyer who founded the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), an Alabama-based nonprofit that aims to defend those who have been unfairly represented or unjustly imprisoned, and Just Mercy is a compilation of some of the cases he encountered during his time. Just Mercy is a collection of redemption and corruption--almost everyone he represents in the story finds their freedom from the unnecessarily harsh sentences they were given. In every other chapter he details the stories of multiple people punished by the legal system, including women and children. It is notable that throughout these chapters Stevenson emphasizes real, human connections with his clients to shine light on how distant and unjust t he prison system is. In a system where these people are given subhuman treatment, Stevenson reaffirms their inherent dignity and cares for them. This has a profound effect on them and the people around them, seen especially in the cases of Charlie (Chapter 6), Joe Sullivan (Chapter 14), and Avery Jenkins (Chapter 10). Introduction There are many myths that surround the genetically modified (GM) crops and food. Are they just a mere myth or it is the truth that has been shunned from public discussion? I believed that, there are some misconceptions and truths upholding the myths with the evidences from great studies conducted by researchers all over the world. From the book GMO: Myth and Truth the second edition by Antoniou and his colleagues (2012), the arguments are adapted to discuss the topic. In this article, the issues that would be discussed involves genetic engineering technique, health hazard of GM food, impacts of GM crops on farms and environment, health hazard of Roundup Ready crops and also feeding the world. Some people argue that, it is unnatural for particular combinations of genes would occur in the environment and the way it is inserted into the host organism would never happen. For instance, in Bt corn and other Bt type of crops, the soil bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis is inserted into the genome of the crop making it contain the insect virus. The natural breeding is actually part of genetic engineering, it just that now they are considered as a sole technique separated from genetic engineering. Here is an example, people from the past found that certain type of crops that are useful for them, therefore it can be argued that the crops that they acquire do actually exist naturally. The farmers only become the medium for the breeding to take place. Nowadays, with technology the scientists are just increasing the odds of those breeding to occur, it might not always happen in the natural environment but the chances are there. Basically, one can argue that genetic engineering is a tool that enhancing natural breeding to occur. Some have argued that the genes inserted to the organism might not go to the specific place where it should be, thus altering the organism in a completely different way. There is an issue where the gene of the desired traits is not producing the expected traits or effects that would affect the plant by causing mutation.

I remember a time in my life when I would always play with little children. At that point, at the age of six or seven, I decided to become a pediatrician or a kindergarten teacher. The more I thought about what profession I wanted to be, I thought about how much I loved working and dealing with computers. My friends and cousins told me that I should and can be what ever I wanted, and that helped me decide to major in computer engineering at San Jose State University. So you see when it comes down to life, dreams are not the only thing that can keep men going, friendships, pets and companionships can do the same. In the novel Of Mice and Men Lennie, George, and Candy demonstrate and prove that dreams are only one of the things that can keep men going. Candy had his dog so long that he never thought that the day would come when people would start having problems with him. Candy was so attached to his dog that he wouldnt hear any of it.
