Genetic Engineering Myth And Truth The Second Edition By...
Introduction There are many myths that surround the genetically modified (GM) crops and food. Are they just a mere myth or it is the truth that has been shunned from public discussion? I believed that, there are some misconceptions and truths upholding the myths with the evidences from great studies conducted by researchers all over the world. From the book GMO: Myth and Truth the second edition by Antoniou and his colleagues (2012), the arguments are adapted to discuss the topic. In this article, the issues that would be discussed involves genetic engineering technique, health hazard of GM food, impacts of GM crops on farms and environment, health hazard of Roundup Ready crops and also feeding the world. These are the main argumentsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The steps of genetic modification are proving that genetic engineering is not an extension of natural breeding. Some people argue that, it is unnatural for particular combinations of genes would occur in the environment and the way it is inserted into the host organism would never happen. For instance, in Bt corn and other Bt type of crops, the soil bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis is inserted into the genome of the crop making it contain the insect virus. The natural breeding is actually part of genetic engineering, it just that now they are considered as a sole technique separated from genetic engineering. Here is an example, people from the past found that certain type of crops that are useful for them, therefore it can be argued that the crops that they acquire do actually exist naturally. The farmers only become the medium for the breeding to take place. Nowadays, with technology the scientists are just increasing the odds of those breeding to occur, it might not always happen in the natural environment but the chances are there. Basically, one can argue that genetic engineering is a tool that enhancing natural breeding to occur. Some have argued that the genes inserted to the organism might not go to the specific place where it should be, thus altering the organism in a completely different way. There is an issue where the gene of the desired traits is not producing the expected traits or effects that would affect the plant by causing mutation.

Of Mice ; Men Essay Example For Students
Of Mice ; Men Essay Warren French writes, The world just hasnt been made right, so that dreams are the only things that can keep men going. Agree or disagree with this statement. I remember a time in my life when I would always play with little children. At that point, at the age of six or seven, I decided to become a pediatrician or a kindergarten teacher. When I started high school, I started feeling stressed out because of the pressure that I was doing to myself to reach my goal of becoming a pediatrician. I could hardly focus on the topic we would have during class because I would be thinking about my future as a pediatrician. With the help of my friends, they helped me overcome the obstacles that I had. The more I thought about what profession I wanted to be, I thought about how much I loved working and dealing with computers. My friends and cousins told me that I should and can be what ever I wanted, and that helped me decide to major in computer engineering at San Jose State University. So you see when it comes down to life, dreams are not the only thing that can keep men going, friendships, pets and companionships can do the same. In the novel Of Mice and Men Lennie, George, and Candy demonstrate and prove that dreams are only one of the things that can keep men going. Lennie, for God sakes dont drink so much. You gonna be sick like you was last night.I aint sure its good water. Looks kinda scummy. (page 3). George is so concerned with Lennie that he tells him to be careful of what he drinks because he does not know if it is good or contaminated. He tells him that so Lennie will not get sick and so that they can save up for their dream house. I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebodyd shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself. No, you stay with me. Your Aunt Clara wouldnt like you running off by yourself, even if she was dead. (page 13). After Lennie and George fight over the dead mouse, Lennie tells him that George would be better off if Lennie went to the mountains to live in a cave. George doesnt let him. He tells him that he wants him to stay because not only did George somewhat promise Lennies dead Aunt Clara that he would take care of him, but he also learned how to live and adjust with the fact that Lennie has kind of a childish mind. Candy says, Wellhell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him..You wouldnt think it to look at him now, but he was the best damn sheep dog I ever seen. (page 44). Candy had his dog so long that he never thought that the day would come when people would start having problems with him. Candy was so attached to his dog that he wouldnt hear any of it. He loved seeing his dog after work so much that he never knew the day would come when his dog would not be in the bunk house at the end of the day. I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldnt ought to let no stranger shoot my dog. (page 61). Candy finally realizes that the other guys were right about his dog. He regretted not putting his dog to rest himself instead of letting Carlson do it. He also realized that his dog was not the only thing tha t kept him going, but the idea that one day he will find a guy who will show him the courtesy of companionship with not only an animal, but also with a person. .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .postImageUrl , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:hover , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:visited , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:active { border:0!important; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:active , .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8 .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud7693d3c27925bc95408866df6abeda8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Universe And Solar System EssayTherefore, I somewhat agree and disagree with that statement. For the most part, I disagree because if a person has friends that will stick by them no matter what then they will have the will to keep going. If that person had a companion, then that person will do what ever it takes to make the other happy.

Sales Presentation Example free essay sample
Sales Presentation Our product is known as Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies (lollipops). We have a variety of different lollipops all with their own multitude of flavors. Our prospecting methods are cold calling, direct mail, using our business website. Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies is the only lollipop manufacturing/distributing company in American Samoa. We will write a custom essay sample on Sales Presentation Example or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is fairly new and very promising. This sales call is an initial sales call to try and start multiple business relationships with different retailers and wholesalers who are interested in selling lollipops. Customer Profile And Planning Sheet: 1. Shalhout Sons Retail P. O. Box 4761 Pago Pago, AS 96799 www. shalhoutretail. com Business Type: Retail Buyer: Mr. Said Shalhout (Owner) 2. TMC Wholesale P. O. Box 20545 Pago Pago, AS 96799 www. tmzws. com Business Type: Wholesale Buyer: Mr. Ele Kaulia (Owner) The objective of our companyââ¬â¢s sale call is to establish a business relationship with a few retail and wholesale companies in American Samoa. Our objective is to sell our companyââ¬â¢s product to local retail/wholesale companies to promote local businesses. Our method for our sales presentation is a small conference between our company representative and the projected customers. This way all projected customers can ask questions and input together. There is no local competition for our business. The only major competition that our company would have is major companies such as Tootsie Pops Blow Pops which both are very popular and favored on island. Although both companies are highly favored on island, Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies has an advantage. Since Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies is located on island costs for shipping handling are non-existent. Buying lollipops from our company is much cheaper than from companies off-island. Our approach is to contact random wholesale/retail businesses and inform them of our product and its benefits. Then we will set up plans to negotiate business. Marketing Plan Our research shows that lollipops are very popular in the island of American Samoa. People both young and old buy them every day. The major age group for consumers is the younger generation (ages 5-17). Since lollipops are now commonly sold at almost every store, school shop, random fundraiser, children are able to buy however many lollipops they want, whenever they want. With lollipops in such a great demand thanks to the many children of American Samoa, retail wholesale stores find themselves wasting so much money by buying lollipops from name brand companies in the states that have high prices plus shipping and handling. Unfortunately, American Samoa never had a local lollipop manufacturing/distributing company until now. Now with Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies retail/wholesale stores will not be pestered by shipping costs and can help support our countryââ¬â¢s economy during such a financially complicated time. Economics Our target market is retail/wholesale stores. The current demand that our customer has is that they need a cheaper way to buy multitudes of lollipops to re-sell to kids seventeen and younger. Our companyââ¬â¢s potential growth depends on the participation of other companies in a business-like manner with our company. Our company has great potential and will most likely be very prosperous seeing that it will be the only Lollipop manufacturer on the island. There are a few barriers that face our company before we completely enter our new company in the business. Seeing how we are distributers our production cost will be very high. The problem with that is that we might lose money. It will take a while before anybody eats our candy do to the fact that it isnââ¬â¢t a brand name on the lollipop. Our future workers must all first learn the skills and train since our company is new and technology constantly changes. Technology would affect this lollipop making process. It would most likely make things much easier than it was before. Shipping costs is now a worry of the past. Our plan to overcome these obstacles is to first advertise properly and constantly so people will know and want to try ââ¬Å"Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies. The change of technology should benefit my company since it will help in making the sell a go! Our only problem is if the US goes into an even further financial slump we could be broke. Product Lollipops are basically and most importantly just hard candies with a small stick in it. The tightly wrapped white paper stick is a handle, and the hard candy lollipops are either sucked or bitten apart until eaten. Lollipops can come in all different sorts of shapes, colors, and sizes. From the ââ¬Å"Tootsie Popsâ⬠to the ââ¬Å"Dum Dumâ⬠lollipops, there are so many different types of lollipops. Even though lollipops come in different sizes and each lollipop seems different from the others, the lollipop is basically made by corn syrup, sugar, flavorings and water. Features and Benefits Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies have a random assortment of lollipops. They have regular flavored lollipops (flavors include cherry, watermelon, grape, blueberry, green apple, etc. ). Another type of lollipop manufactured/distributed by our company is the ââ¬Å"Gummy Popâ⬠, a lollipop with a piece of gum in the center of it, in a variety of flavors (such as, cherry, watermelon, etc. . We also have ââ¬Å"Choco Popsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Rocket Launchersâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Choco Popsâ⬠are basically self-explanatory, a lollipop with a chocolate center (this lollipop also has multiple flavors such as raspberry, orange, etc. ). ââ¬Å"Rocket Launchersâ⬠are Lollipops that are not circular but long and twisted to resemble a small little firecracker of some sort. Rocket Launchers are only one flavo r and that is wild cherry. A few after-sale services that our company provides is that delivery will of course be free seeing how we are the only distributor on our island. We also have a 100% money back guarantee if our customers are not satisfied with the products supplied to them. Customers Our target customers are retail stores and wholesales. Our customers are basically the ones who supply major grocery stores and super markets with food items and more. All of these businesses are located within American Samoa and are of small size. We here at Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies give nothing but the best quality lollipops and are always ahead in technology for our company. As of the moment our prices are set but negotiable. We will discuss prices later on in our presentation. Competition Our only competition is major companies that are off-island such as Tootsie Pops and Charms Blow Pops. Both companies are located in the states far away from the island of American Samoa. They most likely will compete against our small company for American Samoaââ¬â¢s business/ Our company has two advantages though. Being that we are already located on the island, no expensive shipping costs will have to be made and potential customers will save money. Secondly, we pride ourselves in provided top-quality lollipops for our customers. Any defected ones will be tossed. We also are located on island which is more convenient for our potential customers. We offer a 100% money back guarantee if the customer is not satisfied and we always try to maintain a professional business relationship with each and every customer. Our competitive disadvantages are that our company being fairly new is not well known. We most likely will be bought out by major US companies for a while until we become a bit better known. Lastly, we are still fairly new to the business so there are most likely a few things that the major companies might know that we donââ¬â¢t. Nonetheless, we continuously do market researching every day to better familiarize ourselves with our products. Niche Strategy Our niche is the manufacturing and distribution of assortments of lollipops. We pride ourselves in providing nothing but top-quality lollipops or your money back. We also take pride in the fact that we are the first lollipop manufacturer/distributor on island. We plan on conferencing with random retail and wholesale owners to sell our products too. Our strategy is to cold-call major retail and wholesale owners on island and set up conferences with them to discuss further business relationships. We also have a business website for potential customers to check out send flyers and information packs via direct mail. Promotion We have a multitude of ways to promote our products. We have a business website that all interested customers are free to check out. We also placed ads in the newspapers and on TV. Flyers and information packets about our company were and can still be sent if wanted via direct mail or email. We will do this monthly so that our company definitely will get recognized. Lastly, the best type of advertisement is that of your friends. We have many promoters out there along with a network of friends who help spread the word about Sharonââ¬â¢s Lollies. We want our customers to see us as a professional business who strives for top quality and the ability to save our fellow island businesses a few bucks. We only plan on spending $350 a month on this. Pricing Our pricing is determined simply by comparing products with competition and viewing how much they charge and from there we make a reasonable price on our products. For example, a box of Charms Blow Pops would probably cost somewhere around $15 not including tax and shipping costs. After adding both the tax and shipping cost, those blow pops will probably come up to say $25 for that one box. Our companyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Gummy Popsâ⬠are of much better quality and a box of them would probably cost $17 because there is no tax or shipping costs to be bothered with. So our company always finds a way to get profit but remain cheaper. In American Samoa, a lot of decisions are made on the price of an item. If the businesses on-island find a brand item that costs a lot, they most likely wonââ¬â¢t get it if they can find a less known one that is cheaper. Proposed Location Our companyââ¬â¢s warehouse and manufacturing plant will all be located in the village of big business, Tafuna. This location is very good since majority of our customers pass through here every day on random business affairs or just to get home. Our company would be properly situated in one of the bigger lands which resides close to shops that wholesales actually supply to. Parking is reasonable and itââ¬â¢s not too out of the way. It probably is what our customers are expecting to see hopefully want. Our competition is located in the states and it is better left at that because if they were to station down here it would hurt business. Distribution Channels Our products are sold to random retail and wholesale companies in American Samoa. American Childhood essays
American Childhood essays 1. The setting of the story was a little confusing because of the different perspectives and scenery jumps. It takes place in the 1950s. The place where the story first occurs is a suburban Pittsburgh neighborhood. The background is her environment. The tone relates to the story by it being in 1st person perspective. She is remembering her childhood and telling the reader about how her feelings on different things changed. The mood is family warmth and togetherness and how it relates to the suburban neighborhood. 2. There was only one main character in the story, and it was Annie Dillard, the author. Annie has light colored hair and a slender body. She is very adventurous and loves nature. She spends a lot of time reading books. She inherited her fathers taste for music. She likes jazz and Dixieland. Her family loves comedy and teaches her the science of joke telling, so she practices as the straight man in her fathers jokes. There are many different words to describe her, but if I had to choose one I would have to say she is a daydreamer. 3. The theme has to deal with life in general and all changes in it. Life is a journey from childhood to death; with each step through life you become more awake and aware. When she talks about becoming more awake and aware she is saying that youre able to notice changes in yourself and the world. Also, you realize the more you know the less you really know. The world is a very big place always changing and never ending, thats how I think the author would describe the theme of her book. She was showing how everyone elses perspective on life and the world change, as you get older. 4. She starts out in a Pittsburgh neighborhood remembering her early childhood. The story starts with her talking about her family and how she changed over the years. There is no conflict it is just her remembering her childhoo...

Human Resources, Competitive Advantg Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Human Resources, Competitive Advantg - Essay Example HR will have to ensure that they are given equal opportunity and they are protected against issues such as sex discrimination. 2. Sexual harassment has been defined as sexual moves that are unasked for by the victim, requests of favors that are sexual in nature in exchange of promotion or threat of firing the employee and physical and verbal actions and movements that are sexual in nature. Sexual harassment that is recognized as Quid Pro Quo occurs when an individual is offered promotion or is threatened to be fired from his/her position if the employee rejects or accepts favors that are sexual in nature. Sexual harassment that is recognized as Hostile environment occurs when people on the same level of the hierarchy conduct activities that are sexual in nature and are unwanted and make the environment difficult for the victim to continue to operate in an efficient manner. 3. When during the procedure of selection and hiring the HR employs a multiple hurdle model, the applicant has to stay successful during different steps of a test and they have to prove to be successful in every step. If they fail to achieve the passing score in a particular test, they are deemed as unfit for the job. If the HR has employed a compensatory model, they will be making their hiring decision based on the overall scores of all the tests. This model is based on the premise that if an applicant performs well on one test and fails to perform well on the other test, the earlier score will compensate for the score of the second test. 4. According to the job characteristic model, there are five characteristics of a particular job. The first characteristic is skill variety, which is defined as the number of skills that are required to perform a particular job; the second is task identity, which is defined as the completion of the job from the starting point to the ending point. What are the two principle demands for artefact in Italy between 1300 Essay
What are the two principle demands for artefact in Italy between 1300 and 1600 - Essay Example Between 1300-1600 years, Italy was influenced by economic and social changes which had a great impact on social values and traditions, tastes and preferences. The demand for art was caused by different factors including wealth accumulation and the role of religion in everyday life. The principle demands for artifacts in Italy were increasing role of religion and church in life of citizens and new consumption patterns caused by accumulation of wealth and financial prosperity. The demand for a religious art was caused by increasing role of church and religion in life of the state. The supreme task of church art was to serve the liturgy. Hence church art was determined by a particular purpose. The building and furnishing of the House of God were subordinate to that purpose. This subordination was the very reverse of a restriction or hampering of creative power. It was not so much a matter of subordination as of integration into the great reality of God's dealings with man. Images in chur ch were meant to be at the service of the preaching of the faith. This immensely high task required the artist to submit his creative action to the judgment of the word of God. His uncontrolled subjectivity and creative fantasy had to be disciplined by faith. Since he was being called to be a witness to the truth through his work, he did not regard it as a restriction of his freedom when the Church exercised her pastoral office and refused to have images inside the church which contradicted truths of faith. This ordinance was not concerned with aesthetic questions of style and form. In these, so long as no offense was offered to the dignity and holiness of the faith, the artist was free. The Church's preaching, whose task was to declare and explain it, had to conform to this same order. Hence it had to be the measure of the making of images. No indifference could attach to the question of what was displayed in a church, nor to that of where the emphasis was placed in the choice of t hemes (Nanert, 2006). In Italy, literary texts were essential for understanding the devotional trends, and the art of the era was likewise a rich source of information. This was particularly true of panel painting, in which the artist was free to incorporate a wide variety of primary and secondary motifs. The painting of the fifteenth century, for example, was well known for its elaborate symbolism: not only conventional details such as saints' attributes but also specific vestments worn by angels could hold symbolic value (Nanert, 2006). The painter of an annunciation scene, for example, could draw upon several kinds of symbolic and expressive vocabulary: nuances of emotion might be conveyed in the Virgin's facial expression and posture; the painter might suggest linkage between the Old and New Testaments by showing Mary with a Bible open to a prophetic text; an anachronistic portrait of Jesus might hang on the wall behind his mother-to-be; Trinitarian theology could be expressed by showing the Father ho vering above the scene, while the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove winged its way from the Father to the Virgin along a beam of celestial light; and the artist might use flowers, candles, and other objects for their established symbolic value. "Liturgical utensils, accessories, and furnishings constituted a distinct category of these goods that satisfied a steady demand generated by religious needs, and Italian products enjoyed great success in markets abroad" (Goldthwaite 1995,p. 9). Panel painting was increasingly used to represent narrative scenes as well as static portraits (or icons): scenes from the life of Christ, the legend of the Virgin, and legends of the saints were favorite narrative motifs. The accumulation of symbolic, iconic, and narrative elements reached its fullest development as individual
